La expansión de los cultivos de adormidera en Afganistán a consecuencia del conflicto armado, origen de la explosión de la heroína en todo el mundo, ha tenido como efecto secundario la caída de los precios del opio en todo el mundo. Por ello, los granjeros de Myanmar están recurriendo otros cultivos y productos a modo de alternativa, especialmente el de los gusanos de seda, en estos momentos mucho más rentables que el opio.
